How Do You Define Success?

How do you define success?

An athlete has a scoreboard, the student a grade, the businessman money, a blogger followers…

But what if success isn’t tangible? What if you can’t see it in lights or on paper or in the mirror? How then do you define success?

What if you are trying to determine if your parenting is successful, or your marriage, or you work…

What if you’re trying to measure your relationship with God. Do you count the days since your last sin? Do you count the continuous days or study or prayer?

How do you define success?

What if God has called you to task. Is simply following considered success? Should we see change – in us or in those we’re called to? Should we see conversions?

How do you define success?

What if you complete the task God has called you to and nothing seems different, maybe even worse. Is that a success?

In looking back over the last few months, there are times I feel like a failure. Times when I’ve failed my wife, my kids, and my God…

But – but what if I’m unable to quantify success? What if a simple conversion or a new friend or seeing something in a new light is all that comes from this task. Would it then be a success?

What if a single person coming to know Jesus is the only result of a task – a four month (and counting) task. Is it worth it? Is it successful?

You tell me…

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:10
